What is Space-A Travel and How To Take Advantage?

by Kelsey Ramirez

Space-A Travel, short for “Space-Available Travel,” is a program that allows eligible members of the U.S. military community to fly on military aircraft at little or no cost, provided there are available seats after all duty-related passengers and cargo have been accommodated. It’s a fantastic benefit for military personnel, their families, and certain other groups to travel domestically and internationally.

How Space-A Travel Works

1. Sign Up:
– Sign up for Space-A travel via email, in person, or through various online platforms. You can list up to five destinations, and your sign-up is valid for 60 days.
– You can sign up at multiple passenger terminals to increase your chances.

2. Check Flight Schedules:
– Flight schedules are often posted on terminal Facebook pages or websites, but they are not typically available far in advance.
– These flights can depart from various military installations worldwide.

3. Show Up at the Terminal:
– Arrive at the terminal with your required documentation (ID, leave orders if applicable, passport for international travel).
– Check in and get marked “present” on the Space-A roster.

4. Category Priority:
– Space-A passengers are prioritized based on categories, from Category 1 (emergency leave) to Category 6 (retirees). The lower your category number, the higher your priority.

5. Roll Call:
– When the flight is ready to accept Space-A passengers, a roll call will be conducted based on the priority categories and sign-up date/time.
– If your name is called, you’ll be manifested on the flight.

6. Enjoy the Flight:
– Be prepared for a variety of aircraft types, from cargo planes to commercial chartered flights. Conditions can vary, and some flights may have minimal amenities.

Tips for Successful Space-A Travel
  • Flexibility: Since Space-A seats are not guaranteed, having flexible travel dates and destinations increases your chances of securing a seat.
  • Pack Light: Some flights have strict luggage restrictions, especially on smaller aircraft.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on terminal announcements and be ready to adjust plans.
  • Backup Plans: Always have a backup plan in case you can’t get a flight when you need it.

Space-A travel is a great way to explore the world at a minimal cost, but it requires patience, flexibility, and a sense of adventure.
